- Equip venues and leaders with resources to care for those who use their venues
- Advocate for inclusive, evidence-based approaches to mental health
Why this is needed
Globally, adolescent anxiety and depression have escalated since 2010, linked to digital use and reduced outdoor activity. The World Health Organization reports one in seven adolescents has a diagnosable condition. In Australia, 36% of young people report high distress (up from 18% in 2012), and suicide remains the leading cause of adolescent death, with rates increasing by 20% in the past decade.
How The Hemisphere Foundation’s work will help this
The Hemisphere Foundation’s purpose is to advance research into outdoor and nature-based programs, which are known to reduce stress and improve wellbeing. Studies highlight benefits such as lower cortisol and higher life satisfaction. Research will clarify protective factors, track cultural and digital impacts, and examine faith-based contexts in camps and retreats.
